blood, bones and butter

if and when i finish a full fledged good enough to be published and displayed on the 'new and noteworthy' tables of your favorite, soon to be extinct bookstore, book, this is the kind of review i will fantasize and ultimately covet:

"Blood, Bones, and Butter is, quite simply, the far-and-away best chef or food-genre memoir...ever. EVER. It certainly kicked the hell out of my Kitchen Confidential, which suddenly, in a second, felt shallow, sophomoric and ultimately lightweight next to this...this monster of a book, this--at times--truly hardscrabble life…Blood, Bones, and Butter is deeper, better written, more hardcore, more fully fleshed-out; a more well-rounded story than every sunflower-and-saffron account of soft-core food porn in France. It's as bullshit and pretense-free as AJ Leibling--and at least as well written, but more poignant, romantic--even thrilling." - Anthony Bourdain
i just finished 'blood, bones and butter' and i have to agree with mr. no reservation and say it was an engaging, enjoyable read. not because it chronicles the life adventures of a successful chef, but because at its core it is about lifelong relationships and journeys intertwined with food - something i can wholeheartedly relate to.  It reminded me of all the great meals i have had, from my mother's dinner parties to the best restaurants in a dozen cities.  it reminded me of all the journeys that led me to the special occasions, quick bites and homemade dinners that tasted and felt like being in the perfect place at the perfect time.  it reminded me that sometimes making the not so simple taste, read and feel simple is the hardest - and most rewarding - part.
