unless you have gone completely off the grid here, you no doubt have read and heard all about how missouri representative (and republican senate candidate) todd akin, commented to a st. louis television station about 3 weeks ago, when asked about his stance on abortion in case of pregnancy after rape. "It seems to be, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, it’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down.” wow! how a man can make such a ridiculously ignorant and medically impossible statement in 2012 is beyond belief - your average caveman had a better grasp on biology. yet although almost all his party has come out against their latest poster boy and called for akin to drop out of the november race, 3 days later, most of these same republicans approved the platform for the republican convention that calls for a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion with no explicit exceptions for cases of rape or incest.
as a woman, i'm offended, appalled and frightened at the prospect of such dark aged, asinine dogma becoming the law of the land. but then, i read something as powerful and amazing as eve ensler's reply to mr. akin via the huffington post and i am reminded that sanity still has a pretty articulate and vibrant voice.
